starbody plain1You may have noticed the quotes from “A Course In Miracles” I have placed on some of the pictures on this website, so let me offer my unqualified bias by stating that ACIM is one of the most profound scriptures ever brought to this world. It not only contains the eternal truth of reality, but it is written in a beautiful, poetic way, often in blank verse. That being said, it is can also be very annoying and incredibly irritating to the ego-mind that has the mad idea that it runs the world!

I heard about a woman who was attempting to read it and apply its principles to her life, when all of a sudden she stopped her car on a busy bridge over the Potomac River in Washington DC, brought all the traffic to a halt, ran out of her car and chucked it in the river. Another time, when writing an article on the scribe who received the book, I couldn’t remember how to spell her name, so I googled it (lazy me!) and came up with a website that said: “Helen Shucman is now burning in hell!....”

I realised this book definitely brought out the very best and the very worst in people. Only then after years of hesitation did I actually read the book and not allow my inner fear to get in the way.

As some of you know, I am a book editor and book reviewer so I have to read all kinds of writing (including the poorly written, pedantic, boring, clap-trap books!) and so I am used to reading quickly and with some understanding. I trained as a journalist and so work with writing just about every day, yet when I began to read ACIM I would procrastinate, daydream, forget my place, wonder if I’d left the iron on, listen to creeks in the house, and find myself fidgeting all the time.....this is not like me! It was then I realised how amazingly powerful this book is/was!

As we all know, we are prisoners of an ego – the ego is not a “bad” thing but it is when we allow it to run our lives. We know that ego is in charge when we act unlovingly towards ourselves and towards others. Sometimes we recognise this, but most of the time we don’t – this is why the world is the way it is....this is why our lives are the way they are! Most of us try to tackle the ego in unloving ways and this only strengthens it because it thrives on darkness, So we go round and round in circles making little to no progress. The secret is to gently smooth the ego away with love, gentleness, but primarily with truth...the truth is that the ego is nothing....and it is this realisation that the ego fears the most.

A Course In Miracles is a system that gently buffs the ego away, lovingly and truthfully, but absolutely thoroughly. It shines a bright light on all the fluff and b/s that we have fed ourselves on for thousands of years, and allows the light of truth to shine on all the dark cobwebs and lies that make up our lives. It consists of a text (which explains all this) and a workbook which helps us put all this into action in our lives.

The workbook is supposed to be performed over a twelve month period, but if you find that too harsh you can take the time you need. What it does is to slowly peel away the hold your ego has on you, and thus is makes you free, and most importantly, happy!

One of the segments I have quoted on the site is taken from the workbook and it is one of my favourites.

It is Lesson 156: I walk with God in perfect holiness:

“There is a light in you which cannot die; whose presence is so holy that the world is sanctified because of you. All things that live bring gifts to you, and offer them in gratitude and gladness at your feet. The scent of flowers is their gift to you. The waves bow down before you, and the trees extend their arms to shield you from the heat, and lay their leaves before you on the ground that you may walk in softness, while the wind sinks to a whisper round your holy head.

The light in you is what the universe longs to behold. All living things are still before you, for they recognise who walks with you. The light you carry is their own. And thus they see in you their holiness, saluting you as saviour and as God. Accept their reverence, for it is due to Holiness Itself, which walks with you, transforming in its gentle light all things until its likeness and its purity.
